BEAUTYFIX: April 2017

What up, ya’ll?! I caved and subscribed to Dermstore’s BeautyFix box. The month of April is all about natural beauty products because Earth Day is this month… as in TODAY! Happy Earth day, y’all : )

This is was the reason why I purchased this box! And it’s my first time trying an Honest Beauty product! Jessica Alba states Magic Balm is a product that has a lot of uses such as a for cuticles, lips and cheekbones. I love that it is made of a mix of plant oils, butters, and beeswax. What is cool about it is that it looks like a peach-color in the container, but it goes on clear. I have used it on my cheekbones, cuticles, eyelids and lips. I am not a fan of how it doesn’t last long on my lips.

This is a hydrating cream that is supposed to prevent the formation of vertical lines on lips. In theory, this sounds amazing.  It’s very moisturizing, because I wake up with some still on. I like it so far.

I heard so much about Dermalogica and couldn’t wait to try it their eye cream. This is a moisturizing eye treatment helps minimize dark circles and reduce puffiness. Sad that it comes in this tiny size but so far have loved the results. I have seen a residual of puffiness!

I hardly ever use hair products, so I was a bit hesitant to use this. Out of everything in the box, this is a clear favorite. It gives my hair some real shine and I love the way it smells. Will definitely be putting this on my wish list.

Have yet to try this but when I do, I will let you know. I’m excited about the pomegranate oil and the shade is supposedly a flattering one for everyone.

Again, another product I have yet to try. This will also be gifted to my mom!!

I was thrilled to see a juice beauty product as a full sized item, especially as a moisturizer. I plan to gift this to my mother for mother’s day. I think she will appreciate it : )

The first thing I tried was the clay-based mask.  You apply it to your face, let it set for about fifteen minutes, then rinse. It left my face feeling smooth and clear, which I loved! The moisturizer is a yellow cream, which I did not like. I am not a fan of colored moisturizers.

Regardless, I’m so so so happy with my BeautyFix box for April!  Two of the products were misses for me, but I loved everything else in the box!  The Luzern Daily Moisturizer and the Honest Beauty Magic Balm were the only two products that I didn’t love.  My favorite products were definitely the Lucern Detox Mask and the Alterna Caviar CC Cream.

What did you think of this month’s BeautyFix?  Did you have any favorite products?

Etude House Bubble Tea Sleeping Pack – Strawberry Review

I received this as a gift from a dear friend at work : )  And let me tell you, she CLEARLY knows me!!  My skin glows the following morning, trust me.

I always try to grab one little bubble because it carries more moisturizer. Make sure to crush it with the applicator.

The applicator is an amazing tool when getting product, since it scoops just the right amount of product to cover my entire face and neck. TIP, make sure to rub it into your face or you’ll have a sticky face!

I like that this contains strawberry extract, which helps with the vitality and moisture of your skin. Over time, I feel this mask benefits my dehydrated and dry skin! Especially during the winter months. Will have to see how it holds when the summer rolls around.

I really love using this when my skin needs a pick-me-up. It doesn’t clog my pores, which is great! Cute packaging and it smells really great, too. This was a gift, but you can get it here.

Let me know what you think.

My Sunday Evening Skincare

A friend from work recently asked me what my skincare routine was like. Figured I’d share my secrets with ya’ll, too! This is my Sunday evening skincare regiment:

Thayer’s Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel Toner – Original (Found this at my local Marshalls)
MISSHA Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence (here)
Caudalie Vinosource S.O.S Thirst Quenching Serum (here)
*Glossier Mega Greens Galexy Pack (here)
MIZON Korean Cosmetics Snail Repair Eye Cream (here)
*Glossier Moisturizing Moon Mask (here)
Naisture Tea Tree Face Mask (Found this in Marshalls, too)
*Glossier Coconut Balm Dotcom (here)

First, I make sure to shower at around 6pm for about 15 minutes because this starts the clock for my 2 to 2.5 hour routine. Immediately after my shower, I spritz rosewater face mist and apply Glossier’s Mega Green Galexy Pack for 20 to 25 minutes. Apply a thin layer and then do whatever you want. I usually pick my work outfit and throw some food together for Monday’s lunch. I LOVE LOVE that this mask detoxifies my skin, clears my pores and calms my inflammation. Plus, the ingredients are organic!! What’s not to love?!

Next, I wash it off and use Thayer’s Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel Toner – Original. I use about 4 drops on a cotton ball and swab all over my face and neck. I make sure to use one side of the cotton ball tonight, so that in the morning I can use the other side to tone.

When my toner sets, I add about 2 drops of MISSHA’s Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence on my palm, rub it over my hands and gently press the essence all over my face and neck. This feels uber relaxing in that my skin is smooth after the mask and toner.

I am thrilled to see that Caudalie’s Vinosource S.O.S Thirst Quenching Serum is having a great effect on my skin. I do suffer from a bit redness and this serum helps cool down my skin for the the products to set in nicely.

My favorite thing to do is NEXT. I absolutely LOVE face masks. I found out that Marshalls carries tons of different brands for face masks. For this particular brand, it’s five face masks for $5. That’s a steal in today’s world, especially the Naisture brand. I think it’s like $10 online. So do me a favor and check out your local Marshalls or T.J. Maxx. Naisture’s Tea Tree mask smells really nice on your face and it helps my skin stay calm and hydrated from the redness. I leave it on for the full 30 minutes, which allows me to catch up on Netflix’s Chelsea!!

And last but not least is the trifecta. Nearing the end of my routine, I enjoy layering on a thick coat of Glossier’s Moisturizing Moon Mask all over my face and neck, especially during this East Coast winter. I believe this is why I wake up with plumper and refreshed skin EVERY SINGLE morning. Trust me! Up next is MIZON’s Korean Cosmetics Snail Repair Eye Cream. Make sure to use your ring finger and gently tap under your eye. Your ring finger is the weakest finger, and will not drag at your delicate skin around the eyes. Finally, I use Glossier’s Coconut Balm Dotcom on my lips for hydration and rejuvenation during my sleep.

Yup, that’s it! This is my daily night (winter) skin maintenance routine. Spring is coming up, so that means I’ll be changing up my routine when the warmer weather hits. Let me know what you think. I’d love to hear your thoughts or any recommendations.

Book Review: The Last of the President’s Men

Woodward reveals another side of Alexander Butterfield, the Nixon aide who disclosed the secret White House taping system, in forty-six hours of interviews with Butterfield. This is the first book I finished in 2017, which was interesting to follow, especially in today’s political atmosphere.

It actually took me a while to finish, the start of January 2016, because of all the political drama, but I think this is a really good start for people who are interested in the Watergate scandal. I like that Woodward focused more into the mind set of Nixon and how the White House operated during his time, under the watchful eye of Butterfield. I felt his novel provided a great visualization by showing me what it was really like for Butterfield to take down Nixon.

By the end, I felt a better understanding of the how the White House responds when it comes to political scandals. I recommend this book.

Don’t you see the lissome creeper,
how it clings to cracks in somber stone?
Well, just as it entwines that marble alter,
my love, that’s how I yearn to entwine your heart.

Don’t you see how peacefully the moonray
enters quiet waves without unsettling their hush?
Just as it passws into the lake, that’s the way
I yearn to sink to the very bottom of your soul.

Inside your simple, tender heart
my numb dreams yearn to snuggle up,
just as, when nights of winter start,
birds cuddle together in cozy nests.

Book Review: South of the Border, West of the Sun

My least favorite Murakami novel. The ending was dull.

To me, the story is about a person’s meditation on moving on, learning to live with your decisions, learning to change and to adapt with the current. Themes I am very well familiar with.

His words are haunting, yet also matter of fact. I felt this to be a very insightful portrayal of a person, who is always in love with one person, lost from his life and unrequited. The type of question I found myself deliberating was if given a second chance, what would you do? Would you throw away a comfortable happy life/marriage?

With all it’s mundane activity, Murakami does do a beautiful job of presenting the interior landscape of the protagonist’s turmoil and decision process. Just not with his final decision, and consequently, understanding the woman who almost brought him down.

Book Review: Modern Romance

I saw Aziz when he came to do a show in Washington, DC for his book tour in July. His flight was delayed so he ended up being an hour late but what was cool, is that he stayed extra time to answer our questions.

What I was really excited about this book, is that Aziz worked with a sociologist to look at love in the modern age. He covers many topics, from texting to online dating to how romance/love has changed due to technology. I loved that the book took an academic approach with references to graphs and other scientific data with the intent of understanding why we make certain decisions when it comes to our love life.

My three favorite takeaways from the book:

What I loved most about this book was learning the simplicity that dating can be, if given an appropriate amount of time. How the things that really make us fall for someone are their deeper and more unique qualities. How these unique qualities come out during sustained interactions. I agree, that there is something uniquely valuable in everyone, and we’ll be so much happier and better off if we just invest the time and energy it takes to find it.

Dates. When we go on dates, I know that we’re all just trying to find someone who excites us, someone who makes us feel like a genuine connection has been made and can be sustained. Someone who understands us, accepts us and wants to make us be the better version of ourselves. One of the interesting date ideas mentioned and to my utter delight, is to take someone to a monster truck rally. I found this refreshing, exciting and different! I would be thrilled to attend something like this, in hopes of getting a sense of our potential rapport. Invest more in people and spend more quality time with one person.

The chapter on International Investigations of Love proved to be hilariously insightful. Aziz mainly wants to visit Japan because he loves ramen but it ends up working out because Japan is going through a decline marriages and birthrates because people are not showing interest in romance. At one point, Aziz masturbates into a weird egg-shaped thing to make a point about the value of forming a connection with another human. “No matter what happens, you get a lot more out of it than you get from blowing your load into a cold, silicone egg,” he says.

Now, people want more from a long-term relationship than just security and companionship. We dream of finding “the one”, a person who can be a friend, lover, co-parent and soulmate – and we are prepared to keep looking for longer period in order to find that person.
